Do you feel like you can’t move forward? Somewhere in life. Your job. Your relationships. Your goals. Can’t seem to get there, or even start.
Ever take a look what exactly is holding you back?
Not just the surface level. I’m lazy. I don’t feel like it. These are nice to hear but don’t quite get at what the real cause is.
I get many clients who come to coaching looking for help to take some action or reach some goal but can’t. The first thing we do is look for what is stopping them from reaching there.
It usually takes some gentle probing, revealing the why’s and what’s. But once we get there, the path is more clear once we know what is really holding them back in the first place.
What are some possibilities?
It could be external, like a person, place, or thing. Or situation or circumstance.
It is almost always internal. Something about you that is stopping you. Fear. Frustration. Anger. Anxiety.
In nearly every situation, you will need to change in some way to solve the blockage, even if it involves an external entity.
So for those of you reading now – do you have something that is holding you back?
Bring that into your consciousness now. Then ask yourself, what is holding you back.
It’s OK. Just identify what comes up, whether specific or vague.
Then, start probing. Ask yourself these questions:
What makes this hold me back? (How is this a blockage to you?)
If there are external factors, what are they and what is your relationship to them? (How you interact with these factors gives you potential solutions)
What creates these emotions that came up? (Find the reason why there are negative emotions associated with this blockage)
When did this first start? (Examine the circumstances where this first started may yield clues as to how to break this pattern)
Why do you want the reach this goal? (Could it be that it is a reason that really isn’t valid…?)
And others…
Often a gentle probing will often reveal what the blocks truly are, and then what to do in their presence.
Give it a try now! Grab a pen and paper and ask yourself these types of questions and fully describe this block that you’re having on a particular goal, including what makes this goal so important to you.
And when you do, what does it reveal to you about yourself and potential solutions?
