Saying What’s Going on in Your Mind

Saying what’s going on in your mind

This refers to when a client is talking, and as they talk usually you are processing too and are coming up with intuitively what is going on here and what needs to be addressed/corrected. What usually happens is you:

  1. Ignore it.
  2. You’re afraid to say it for fear of hurting their feelings, saying the wrong thing, being wrong.

However, instead, under the tenets of direct communication, we should instead just say what is going on in our heads – we just need to figure out how to say it so that it will be appropriately received and not hurtful, judgmental, or critical. It takes courage to say what is going on in your mind, and it’s practicing direct communication when we do. We also need to be prepared and ok if the client says that we were wrong and it’s something else. If it is, just let it go and move on. But often our intuition is right, and it can be a great way of getting to the heart of the matter, and usually the client needs to hear it.
