What Is Standing In Your Way?

Trying to finish something? Trying to go somewhere? Move forward with you life or work or a relationship? Something else?

What’s standing in your way of getting there? Do you know?

Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor once said, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Wow! Smart dude! Makes sense right?

What is blocking you reveals what you need to do first. Address the block!
The path forward becomes clear.
Focusing on the end goal isn’t going to get there right now.
You need to focus on dealing with the block!
Therefore, uncertainty drops away, doesn’t it?
Clarity on the path, therefore, breeds action.

So if you can’t move forward to some goal, instead of wallowing in inaction because you can’t move from here, how about working on what is blocking you first?

You’re thinking – sounds easy, Coach Dave BUT…

I don’t know WHAT is blocking me!
And if I do, HOW THE HECK DO I UNBLOCK MYSELF?

Before you go looking for help (like finding a coach!), try these:

First, to generate awareness of WHAT is blocking you, answer the questions:

How important to me is <insert goal>?

If it’s not important, or a nice to have versus need to have, there you go!

What do I fear will happen to me, if I <insert goal>?

Fear saves us. Keeps us safe. So what are you afraid of if you were to move towards this particular goal? Then, where does that fear come from?

What feelings come to mind as you consider <insert goal>?

Emotion is a powerful driver. It is also revealing. Fear is one of them. But what others come up as you consider your goal? The lack of emotional energy towards the goals you make is also a common block. What makes you try to move towards something when you don’t really feel anything about?

AWARENESS always comes first, and of what is blocking you here.

Then comes the proper resolution.

As you consider the answers to these questions (and there are many others!), what possible resolutions come to mind to UNBLOCK yourself? How do you feel now, following the advice of Marcus Aurelius and that the path forward is clearer to you?
